Substance Abuse Counselor

Common Duties:

  • Assists in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes
  • Attend various training sessions to increase knowledge and skills
  • Be knowledgeable in and provide information to clients and family members regarding addiction issues and services available
  • Conduct educational sessions for clients, professionals and the general public
  • Coordinate plans and programs with other mental health professionals
  • Counsels clients and patients, individually and in-group sessions
  • Determine suitability for participation

     

  • Develop and implement follow-up care plans
  • Develop and implement public service plans to help public better understand substance abuse
  • Develop and implement treatment plans
  • Develop and maintain records
  • Documentation of patients' histories, progress, provided services and other pertinent information
  • Intervene in crisis and emergency situations
  • Interview clients. Establish mental and physical condition
  • Make referrals when necessary
  • Modify treatment plans when necessary
  • Periodically review client progress. Are goals being reached?
  • Work professionally with doctors, nurses, social workers and other professionals
  • Work with family members, friends and others close to client
  • Work with law enforcement in cases regarding a client
  • Work with probation officers, community services and other agencies
