Substance Abuse Counselor
Common Duties:
- Assists in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes
- Attend various training sessions to increase knowledge and skills
- Be knowledgeable in and provide information to clients and family members regarding addiction issues and services available
- Conduct educational sessions for clients, professionals and the general public
- Coordinate plans and programs with other mental health professionals
- Counsels clients and patients, individually and in-group sessions
- Determine suitability for participation
- Develop and implement follow-up care plans
- Develop and implement public service plans to help public better understand substance abuse
- Develop and implement treatment plans
- Develop and maintain records
- Documentation of patients' histories, progress, provided services and other pertinent information
- Intervene in crisis and emergency situations
- Interview clients. Establish mental and physical condition
- Make referrals when necessary
- Modify treatment plans when necessary
- Periodically review client progress. Are goals being reached?
- Work professionally with doctors, nurses, social workers and other professionals
- Work with family members, friends and others close to client
- Work with law enforcement in cases regarding a client
- Work with probation officers, community services and other agencies
Expected:
- Certified
